Pre-pegs: what they are and what they are for

Pre-pegs are pre-committed materials: among the most important semi-finished products that are used in the production of composites. The term pre-pegs refers to a fiber reinforcement that has been impregnated with a resin or in matrix, usually thermostable, with a long time before use. The fibers often take the shape of a fabric, and the matrix is used to join them together and with other components during manufacture.

A much better quality consistency than alternative systems that is particularly evident in defined fiber/resin ratios (with other systems it is often necessary to use more resin than necessary because a significant percentage of resin is lost, dispersed in the production process), resulting in the possibility of achieving important reductions in the final weight of the composite;

The ability to arrange the fibers in all desired axial orientations, even at “zero angle” (which is impossible with filament winding, for example) resulting in the ability to place all fibers, in the composite, in the quantities and with the spatial arrangements, the geometries defined by design.
